Opinion Poll: December 2012

As the end of the year approaches we are keen to see how you have all felt things have been in 2012 for our industry in Asia.

Has it been a busy positive year for you? Have things slowed down? We are keen to know. Next month we will find out how you feel about things going into 2013.

As always, thank you for voting!

Monthly Update: November 2012

Poll Result

We had a very good response this month to our poll with many of you voting to tell us what you look for in a recruiter. The results can be seen below:

The two things rated most highly were consultants with honesty and integrity and consultants with good client relationships. We think this is quite telling. The most common complaints we get from candidates who have come to us having previously worked with other recruiters is that the other consultants have lacked honest/integrity and that they didn’t seem to be able to do anything other than send a CV to HR i.e. they lacked strong client relationships. If a recruiter is simply offering a CV sending service (which 0% of you voted for) then there is limited value being added to the recruitment process. Career advice and receiving feedback were also rated as important. A good consultant, even if they cannot help someone, should be able to provide feedback as to why and offer general advice to point someone in the right direction. As recruiters however there is a balance we have to strike – we receive MANY applications every day and unfortunately cannot help or respond to all people if they do not fit the requirements of our clients. It is very easy for a recruiter to end up as a career counselor to candidates and to become distracted from finding the right people for their clients. It is important therefore as a candidate to really understand if you do fill the requirements of an recruiter’s advertised position by carefully checking the listed requirements. If a position is stated as needing a language skill which you do not have then a client will not consider someone without this.

What’s Hot

November has seen a surprising uplift in the number of requirements we have had come through to us considering a lot of clients start to focus on the holidays at this time of year.

One of our biggest clients is massively expanding their retail leasing team and continually taking on candidates in Hong Kong in this space. Leasing candidates with experience in commercial and retail properties are in high demand with both developers and with some consultancies. We have positions at senior and junior levels.

With architecture and design, the need for strong design led candidates has increased with opportunities becoming available in China with some international practices. New today we have some Director level positions with a design firm in their Shanghai and Beijing offices. All the positions we have now do really need candidates to have had experience working in China before, even when considering non-Mandarin speakers. Opportunities exist in interior design in Hong Kong – hotel and commercial experience ideally.

In Project Management our developer needs continue with people required for positions in Hong Kong and China. In essence, if you are currently with a developer, have delivered projects in China or Hong Kong for a developer and are interested in a change, we can probably help you! Architecture, Interior Design and Engineering experience are all backgrounds we are looking for.
