Monthly Update: August 2012

Poll Result

This month we asked you how you felt about the Construction and Property Industry’s prospect for the remainder of 2012. The results are below:

80% of you feel that things are either fairly positive or very positive. We would say this mirrors the sentiment we are experiencing when speaking to our clients and candidates in the market at the moment. Perhaps the best way to describe things would be “cautious optimism” but there seems to be hope that stimulus efforts and long term growth, particularly in China, will be able to offset the potential negative effects of global uncertainty elsewhere. Only 1/5th of you felt things were fairly negative or extremely negative (2%) which we would hope is a good sign. We have certainly seen a lot more work come our way in the last 2-3 months and clients are speaking about how busy they are and will be over the remainder of the year.

What’s Hot

August has been perhaps our busiest month since 2011. We are receiving calls and requests for people on an almost daily basis from existing and new clients.

Within leasing, marketing and business development we have been instructed on a variety of positions ranging from director level right through to officer level. Our relationships within the developer and client side organisations are incredibly strong and we have been successfully placing many candidates into positions. If you have strong retail experience, this seems to be most in demand with opportunities in China and Hong Kong within some extremely desirable companies.

Project management positions continue to come through. We have roles within large or small developers and again, these are at a variety of seniority levels. We have seen an increase in the need for candidates to be stationed in China. A lot of people are keen to relocate to Hong Kong but unfortunately the need for candidates here is not as pressing. If you are a project management professional, who is architecturally trained or with strong delivery experience, on site, in China, we genuinely have some very interesting positions available – these roles will pay extremely well and will be located in some 2nd/3rd tier cities with the perks associated with slightly less desirable locations. We strongly believe that these opportunities are great career enhancers and our clients are extremely desirable top tier developers to work for.

Within architecture and design, the same applies as in July i.e. We are actively looking for senior design talent for companies in China. These are Associate Director and Design Director level people, the key being a real strength in design. We need good retail interiors candidates in Shanghai and strong hotel interiors candidates in all locations across China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Some of these are at Design Director level and offer great opportunities at a leadership level in the Asia market. Urban Designers and Planners are needed for roles in China and again, these are at a variety of levels of seniority.

What’s the Real Story Behind Getting an Employment Visa for Hong Kong?

There are a lot of urban myths about who can and cannot get an employment visa for Hong Kong. Consequently, we thought it would be good to ask Stephen Barnes, immigration expert and author of the Hong Kong Visa Handbook to set the record straight for us once and for all.

Opinion Poll: August 2012

*Poll now closed! Thank you all for voting and telling us your opinion.*

We last asked for your opinions on the Construction and Property industry back in January, with a focus particularly on China. Back then, most of you were positive about the prospects for 2012. We are now keen to see how you see things for Asia now that we are into the 2nd half of the year. Is the optimism still there? Have things got better or worse since January? Please let us know what you think and we will go through the results at the end of the month.

Monthly Update: July 2012

Poll Result

This month we were keen to find out how many of you may be considering changing positions in the next 6 months. The results are below.

85% of you said you were either “yes” thinking about changing a job or “maybe” considering something new. Without knowing the exact demographics of the voters it’s hard to draw firm conclusions as to what this result shows. Generally, from speaking to candidates out there, sentiment in Asia is still pretty positive despite plenty of debate about the current and future state of the big Asian economies and we would say these results mirror that sentiment. When markets are down, people tend to want to stay put and remain in stable positions. When markets are stronger there is more of a openness to considering new ideas.

What’s Hot

July was an incredibly busy month for us and we have seen a real uplift in the number of new requirements coming through from all our clients.

We have many roles, at all levels, in the leasing sector for developers in Hong Kong and China. Good large scale mall experience is really important here and we can offer options at Director level for the most senior candidates. In addition we have some interesting business development and marketing positions, also with developers. These are top tier companies with strong and growing presences in the China market. A lot of the developers can offer genuine career development options to candidates.

On the project management side our busiest clients have got busier. We have more opportunities (although still not lots) for people now to be stationed in Hong Kong with frequent travel to project sites in China. These are roles for experienced project managers with good architectural or E&M backgrounds and we have multiple opportunities here. We are also working exclusively with some smaller high-end developers who are looking to expand their presence in the region – for these companies we need senior people capable of managing the project teams and project pipeline. These are key, very well paid positions and offer some exciting opportunities along with some great challenges.

Within architecture and design, we are actively looking for senior design talent for companies in China. These are Associate Director and Design Director level people, the key being a real strength in design. We have also had some unique requirements through for architects with specific experience, namely in the healthcare sector. There are opportunities in Shanghai or Singapore with a really great firm. Architects with experience running projects are needed in multiple practices in China – China experience is key here. Similarly, we have probably more than 10 positions for hotel interior designers in Hong Kong (and some in China) – strong concept and also project manager type candidates needed here.
