Chinese City Fact: Suzhou

Suzhou is a historically important city in China with it’s stone bridges, canals and intricately designed gardens helping to make it one of the top tourist destinations in China. In 2000 the classical gardens were given World Heritage Site status by UNESCO.

In the Suzhou region there are a number of ancient water towns making Suzhou famous for being the “Venice of the East”.

Recent development has been rapid with a high speed rail link to Shanghai linking the cities with a 25 minute journey time on the fastest trains. That said, the Chinese Government is ensuring that the historical importance of the city is preserved as much as possible and as such imposes tighter building controls than in most cities.
