Chinese City Fact: Harbin

Harbin is the 10th largest city in China with a population of nearly 10 million people. Situated in Northern China the temperature in winter averages around -15ºC. This makes it ideal to host the annual “Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival” which opens on 5th January (tomorrow) and lasts a month. Ice is taken from the frozen Songhua river and carved into the various sculptures. Some are full scale castles and buildings and the festival is best visited at night when the place is lit with lanterns and coloured lights.
